Colombo (Sri Lanka) – Sri Lanka’s unprecedented violence on Tuesday raised the death toll to eight after supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful rebels demanding expulsion from the country’s worst economic crisis.
More than 200 people were injured in the violence in Colombo and other cities.
The violence led to arson attacks on the homes of several politicians, including the ancestral homes of Rajapaxus in Hambantota. The video footage showed Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his younger brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s entire home in Medamulana, Hambantota, on fire.
Imaduwa Pradeshiya Sabha President A V Sarath Kumara has died following an attack on his residence on Monday. Kumara, 63, was hospitalized with a heart condition following the attack. One person has been killed after an attack on a popular hotel in Negombo.
Several luxury cars worth millions of rupees were completely destroyed. SLPP MP Amarakeerthi Athukorala and his security guard died in Nittambuwa on Monday.
