Sri Lanka’s new prime minister has told the media about the economic crisis that “it will get worse before it gets better”.
The country faces a fuel shortage issue, and the increased price of food items makes people skip their meals.
Ranil Wickremesinghe was appointed as the sixth time Prime Minister yesterday only. The Prime Minister said to the media that he would ensure families get three meals a day.
The new Prime Minister described Sri Lanka’s economy as “broken” but urged Sri Lankans to “be patient; I will bring everything back.”
President Gotabaya Rajapaksa swore in Mr Wickremesinghe on Thursday, but his appointment has generally been met with disapproval, as he is considered too close to the politically powerful Rajapaksa family.
In an interview, Wicklemesinge agreed with protesters seeking the resignation of President Rajapaksa but said this would not happen. He said, “Blaming won’t lead to action; I’m here to see people nourished,”.He also added that he is “going to change all the policies of the Rajapaksa government”.”
“We need your help for a year and will repay everything we receive. Help us to reach our goals. We are the longest and oldest democracy in Asia.” – he added to seek international help.
Sri Lanka’s economic crisis is in danger. There is no availability of fuel or food services. Many of them had died while standing at the petrol station to fill up the fuel.
