France: On Monday, Elisabeth Bourne was appointed as the new prime minister of France, becoming the second woman in the country to hold the position.
Bourne, 61, will succeed Jean Casteux, whose resignation was expected after President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected last month. Macron and Bourne are expected to appoint an entire government in the coming days.
Born under Socialist President François Mitterrand from 1991 to 1992 is the second woman to hold office after Prime Minister Edith Cresson.
He has served as Labor Minister in Macron’s previous government since 2020. Before this, she was Minister of Transport and Minister of Ecological Transition under Macron.
French Prime Minister Jean Casteux resigned on Monday in a move expected after the re-election of centrist President Emmanuel Macron last month, who will quickly name a replacement.
Castex came to the Elysee Rashtrapati Bhavan to formally tender his resignation, which was “accepted” by the President.
Macron may announce a new prime minister soon. French media say Labor Minister Elizabeth Bourne is the favourite for the job. In France, it is common for presidents to have more than one prime minister during their term.
Macron and his new prime minister will hold talks in the coming days to appoint a new French government.
