‘Samrat Prithviraj’ is the second commercial success for both Akshay Kumar (after ‘Bachchan Pandey’) and Yash Raj Films (‘Jayeshbhai Jordaar’).
Akshay Kumar’s period drama ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ has turned into a commercial disaster as the film has raked in a total of Rs 55 crore at the domestic box office against a massive reported budget of Rs 200 crore, which is part and parcel of some A period film given heavy production design, VFX and era-specific costume design.
Reportedly, reminiscent of the fate of the Kangana Ranaut-starrer Dhaakad, the film’s shows are being cancelled and flushed in many circuits due to zero occupancy to make way for more commercially viable shows of other films, which has led to Reportedly keeping only one collection on the 8th day of its release for Rs 4,400. Only 20 tickets were sold across India.
A YRF production directed by Chandraprakash Dwivedi, Samrat Prithviraj, opened in theatres on June 3. It clashed with two films from different regions – the trilingual ‘Major’ (Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam) and the pan-India ‘Vikram’ starrer. Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil and Vijay Sethupathi.
While both ‘Major’ and ‘Vikram’ are registering a jump in their collections, ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ is single-handedly rejected by cine-lovers despite its grandeur and scale.
Senior film trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the figures of ‘Samrat Prithviraj’s India business’ on his Twitter.
