Gurunaidu Sanapati has become the first Indian weightlifter to win gold at the IWF Youth World Championships in Leon, Mexico.
The 16-year-old won the gold medal in the boys’ 55kg event late Sunday night with a total effort of 230kg (104kg + 126kg).
2020 Asian Youth Weightlifting Championships bronze medalist Sanpati topped the podium, with Saudi Arabia’s Ali Majeed 229kg (105kg+124kg) second and Kazakhstan’s Yerasil Umarov 224kg (100kg+124kg) third.
Besides Sanapati, compatriot Soumya S Dalvi won a bronze medal in her event on the second day of the competition.
Dalvi of Maharashtra, a two-time Khelo India Youth gold medalist, lifted 148 kg (65 kg + 83 kg) in the 45 kg girls’ event with Rose J Ramos of the Philippines and 155 kg (70 kg + 85 kg) of Venezuela Kerlis. M. Montilla finished third behind 153kg. 71 kg + 82 kg).
The other Indian player R Bhavani finished eighth with a best effort of 132kg (57kg+75kg). India now has four medals in the word event. Akanksha Kishore Vyavare and Vijay Prajapati won silver medals in their respective matches on the first day of the competition.
India did not participate in the previous edition of the tournament held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia last year.
