At least 250 people have been killed and many injured in a powerful earthquake in Afghanistan. Images shared on social media showed injured people breaking into stretchers, rubble and houses in Paktika province.
A local government official said the death toll could exceed 250, and more than 150 people were injured. The earthquake was about 44 km (27 mi) southeast of the city of Khost.
According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center, the tremors were felt in more than 500 km of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. The centre said witnesses had reported feeling the quake in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul and Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
