Murray and Williams had five match points but were denied some fine play by Britain’s O’Mara and Barnett, who won the second-round meeting 3-6 6-4 7-6 (18-16).
Both pairs were given a great cheer on Court Two by a thrilled crowd, who were sad to see Murray and Williams’ partnership end, but cheered for their motivated opponents.
Murray and Williams took a 4-2 lead in the second and third sets, but 27-year-old O’Mara and 28-year-old Barnett made their fifth-match point win in the quarterfinals.
They will now face the top seeds of Jean-Julian Roger of the Netherlands, Ana Shibahara of Japan, or Australians Matthew Ebden and Samantha Stosur.
