Colombo(Sri Lanka): Senior politician Dinesh Gunawardene took over as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on Friday as President Ranil Wickremesinghe took oath in his new cabinet.
Gunawardene, 73, a veteran of Sri Lankan politics, has previously been Foreign Minister and Education Minister.
In April, he was appointed Home Minister by then President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The post of prime minister fell vacant after 73-year-old Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the country’s eighth president on Thursday after Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country and resigned from the presidency.
He has called for bipartisanship to address the country’s unprecedented economic crisis.
