Quezon City(Philippines): Three people have been killed in an apparent targeted shooting at graduation ceremonies in the Philippines.
Rose Furige, a former mayor, was also among the dead. She was attending her daughter graduation, who was injured in a shooting in Quezon City. The accused gunman has been arrested. He is believed to have been involved in a legal dispute with Furige.
School and university shootings are rare in the Philippines, but killing politicians are relatively common. The shooting occurred during an event for law students and their families at the Ateneo de Manila University.
Furige was the mayor of Lamitan, a city in the troubled south of the Philippines. But police pointed to the suspect’s “long history” of disputes with Furige.
His assistant and a university security guard also died during the attack. Police said Furige’s daughter is in stable condition at the hospital. Chief Justice of the Philippines Alexander Gesmundo was on his way to speak at the ceremony before the shooting.
In a statement, Philippines President Ferdinand Marcos Jr said police would “thoroughly and swiftly investigate these killings and bring all involved to justice”.
