The Supreme Court on Friday ordered the premature release of Nalini Sriharan and RP Ravichandran, who are serving life sentences in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Both had gone to the higher court to ask for an early release.
A panel of judges B R Gavai and B V Nagarathna said the higher court’s judgment in the case of A G Perarivalan, one of the convicts in the case, was applicable in their case.

Invoking its extraordinary power under Article 142 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court had on May 18 ordered the release of Perarivalan, who had served more than 30 years in prison.
During a poll, Gandhi was assassinated on the night of May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu by a female suicide bomber, identified as Dhanu.
